The GRE is administered by ETS (Educational Testing Service), the same company that administers the SAT's. It is a 3 hour and 45 minute computer based exam which tests your knowledge of Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. It is a multiple choice, multi-stage test. According to ETS.org, the GRE is the only admissions test for Graduate or Business school that let's you skip questions within a section, go back and change answers, and have control over which questions, within a section, you want to answer first.
Abelson GRE Prep will teach you how to understand what each question type is asking, and how to think like the test maker.

The Verbal Reasoning Questions measure your ability to:
Analyze and draw conclusions from discourse; reason from incomplete data; identify author's assumptions; understand multiple levels of meaning, such as literal, figurative and author's intent.
Abelson's world class reading and analytical skills will teach you what the verbal reasoning questions are asking using our proven formulaic strategies.
The Quantitative Reasoning Questions measure your ability to:
Abelson's math specialists will teach you how to:
Interpret and Analyze quantitative information.
Solve problems using mathematical models.
Apply mathematical and concepts of arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data interpretation.
The Analytical Writing Questions measure your ability to:
Abelson Writing Specialists, will teach you how to:
Articulate complex ideas clearly and effectively
Support ideas with relevant reasons and examples
Examine claims and accompanying evidence
Sustain a well focused, coherent discussion
According to ETS.org, the analytical writing section "requires you to provide focused responses based on the tasks presented, so you can accurately demonstrate your skill in directly responding to a task."
Research / Unscored Section:
ETS has an unidentified unscored section that does not count toward your score. It may or may not be included on your test, and will appear in any order after the analytical writing section.
Secondly, you may have a research section that does not count toward your score, and may be included in place of the unscored section. The research section, if included, will appear at the end of the test.
